Planning a Meaningful Farewell

Planning how you would like to be remembered can be practical, personal, and deeply meaningful. It can also reduce uncertainty for the people you love. You can make a simple outline now and change it whenever you want.

Begin With the Feeling

Think about how you want people to feel, what reflects your values or beliefs, and whether you prefer a traditional service, small gathering, celebration of life, private goodbye, or no formal event.

Funeral, memorial, celebration of life, or gathering details.
Location, officiant, readings, music, photos, clothing, flowers, or charitable gifts.
Religious, spiritual, cultural, or family traditions.
People you would like involved or notified.
An obituary, message, recording, or items you want shared.

Practical Questions+

Who has legal authority to carry out the arrangements?
Have you compared costs and understood any prepaid plan?
Where are contracts, cemetery information, or other records stored?
Do your trusted people know where to find your preferences?
Which choices are firm, and where can loved ones decide?

Share the Plan+

Tell at least one trusted person that the plan exists and where it is stored. Keep it with other important documents, but separate from a will if the will may not be read until after arrangements begin.

A meaningful farewell does not need to be elaborate. Clear preferences and a few personal details can give loved ones direction while leaving room for them to grieve in their own way.
